Comprehend has named Michael Coates and Clint Smith to its advisory board to support company expansion and growth in adoption of its cloud-based clinical data insights software. With established networks and valuable industry expertise in legal, security and technology, Coates and Smith bring expert leadership and innovative perspective to the life sciences data insights company.

With more than 10 years of experience in application and network security, Coates focuses on managing risk and developing techniques to integrate security into the development life cycle and culture of organizations. He currently serves as director of product security at Shape Security, where he is responsible for changing the way organizations defend their applications against modern security attacks. Previously, Coates spent three years at Mozilla Corporation as director of security assurance, where he managed a team of over 25 security engineers focusing on Firefox, web applications and infrastructure security. In 2011, Coates was named chairman of the board of OWASP, a non-profit organization with the mission of advancing the state of application security. Coates holds a M.S. in computer, information and network security from DePaul University and a B.S. in computer science from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Grounded in over two decades of general counsel for leading technology companies, Smith currently serves as vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary at DataStax. In this role, he is responsible for company's legal affairs including corporate law, intellectual property strategy, commercial contracts, compliance, litigation and legal aspects of global expansion. Prior to his current position, Smith served as vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary at a range of technology companies, most recently including TrialPay and MySQL. From 2009 to 2013, Smith served on the advisory board of RightScale, a cloud portfolio management company, which was a time of rapid product development and business growth for the company. Smith is a Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP/US) through the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP). Smith holds both a J.D. of law and a M.A. of political science from University of California, Berkeley, and a B.A. in mass media and political behavior from Pomona College.

Smith and Coates join a distinguished group of Comprehend advisors, including Marc L. Abramowitz, Alex Sefanov and Kirill Sheynkman.
